Learning through imaginary play has long been recognised as an important component of child development. As far back as the late nineteenth Century, studies have proven an association between role play and mental and behavioural development in babies and young children. For example, in the s American psychologist and educator, Granville Stanley Hall focused on childhood development and evolutionary theory. Hall was the father of the Child Study Movement, which initiated an interest in the developmental, mental and behavioural world of babies and children.

But more and more parents realize that just learning academics is not enough, and they see young people in their communities suffering from a lack of needed learning, and society suffering as well. Young children develop holistically, but in order to fully achieve the support in health, nutrition, care, protection early stimulation and learning are significant.
The development and learning goals of young children are therefore multi-dimensional. They are achieved when young children survive and become physically healthy, mentally alert, emotionally secure, socially competent, able to learn, culturally and spiritually aware and aesthetically creative.
They grow up to become responsible and productive adults. Holistic development of young children is both aspirations and guiding principle of early childhood interventions, and a key determinant of national development.
It is basically encouraging the "whole child". The theory is that if a child is not able to emotionally respond appropriately to stimulus, the child cannot learn. Children enjoy physical play, indoors and outdoors. They revel in freedom of movement and in play that is inventive, adventurous and stimulating.
Children also learn social skills as they cooperate with one another and show consideration for one another. A healthy child has lots of energy.
Children need to develop academic capacities as these are required to live in the modern world. But much more than this is needed, and adults looking at what was required in order to meet the many challenges of their lives and the successes they have had can attest to this.
The essential learning that we all need should begin in childhood. In brief, holistic education has contended that education must deliberately help children learn about the nature of society, themselves, and relationships.
These are very complex things, full of potential joys as well as sorrow. It has long maintained that less education or inadequate education lies at the roots of our modern problems, and a different kind of education has a real chance of solving them.Young children must have ample opportunities to develop physically, and motor play instills this disposition toward physical activity in young children.
